The Charlotte Criterium becomes THE ROCK HILL CRITERIUM
The Charlotte Criterium, one of America’s most prestigious criterium bicycle races, is making the move south from Charlotte to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to become the “Rock Hill Criterium”. The race will take place at the grand opening of the Criterium Course in the city’s Rock Hill Outdoor Center, located within the Riverwalk Community. In addition to the Criterium Course, the Rock Hill Outdoor Center is home to the world class Giordana Velodrome, the Novant Health BMX Supercross Course, mountain bike trails, and walking trails.
“We are excited about our new partnership with the City of Rock Hill and the future of this event in Rock Hill,” said Thad Fischer, Managing Director of FCE Sports Management. “We have enjoyed a great partnership with Charlotte over the past 13 years and appreciate all of the support that the event was given by everyone involved. We look forward to hosting a national level criterium on the brand new course in Rock Hill. The criterium course in Rock Hill will offer challenging and exciting racing.”
Over the past 13 years this criterium has been considered one of the best in the country with professional race winners coming from 12 different countries. Over $1 Million in prize money has been distributed and spectator attendance has averaged 30,000 per year. In partnership with The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas over $6 Million has been raised in the fight against brain tumors and cancer.
Mayor Doug Echols commented, “We are thrilled to be hosting the 2017 Criterium in Rock Hill. By all accounts, the Rock Hill Outdoor Center at Riverwalk is the only venue in the world where all five cycling disciplines will be located, and I can’t think of a better way to officially open the new criterium course than with this highly acclaimed race!”
The Rock Hill Criterium will make its debut on April 22, 2017. This race is on the USA Cycling National Calendar and is the opening race of the USA CRITS Speed Week Series. There will be Amateur races during the day and both Men and Women’s Professional races in the evening. The event will also continue it’s role in supporting The Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas.
