Charlotte, NC – March 15, 2009 – The Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium will kick off on Saturday, August 8th at 5:30 pm with the professional women and at 7:00 pm with the professional men. Along with the men’s 50-mile twilight criterium, which laps through a 1.2-mile course starting at the Center City intersection of Trade and Tryon Street, this year Charlotte will also once again host a 25-mile professional women’s race.

The Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium is ranked as the number one criterium race in the country for both men and women of the thirty-four events on the 2009 National Racing Calendar. This ranking is based upon several factors including quality of race venue, attendance of top teams, prize money, spectator attendance, team surveys and race reports from cycling officials.

The Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium will feature an international field of 200 of the world’s best riders competing for over $75,000 in prize monies. Last year more than 35,000 spectators watched an elite field of riders from 23 countries, and this year’s crowd is expected to be even bigger.

Expected to return and defend their 2008 titles are Katherine Carroll of the United States and Alejandro Borrajo of Argentina. Also riders expected to return are 2007 winners Tina Pic and Frank Pipp. Professional teams expected to attend include Colavita, Ouch Racing, Rock Racing, Tibco, Webcor, Team Type 1, Vanderkitten, Jelly Belly, Bissell Pro Cycling, Kenda and Kelly Benefits.

Presbyterian Hospital is the Title Sponsor with TimeWarner Cable the Presenting Sponsor for the event. The race is expected to draw over 30,000 live spectators and an additional 75,000 watching live television coverage.

This is the sixth year for the event, which raises money and awareness for the Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas.
